Phillip Island is where you can walk with penguins, hug koala bears and steep yourself in nature. Only three hours away from Melbourne, this island is the rarest of the rare beauty spots that leaves its visitors agape and over-awed. Getting into the island from San Remo with the help of a bridge you will get to view beaches galore with magnificent surfing areas and walking trails.
The place is clotted with quaint bed and breakfast places and yet, if you really do want live it up and sojourn in a luxury hotel we recommend you plan your stay at Hollywood Hotel. This hotels is pretty close to the main town Cowes. The Hollywood Hotel has all the amenities of a good five star hotel and then some. Walk down to the golden and feel the sand crunch on a beach which is practically attached to this five star hotel.
The luxury hotel has a great restaurant and bar which can take up to 70 people. Other luxury hotels in Philip Island include the All Seasons, Quest Philip Island, and The Continental Hotel, to name a few.
Soak in the amenities of the Hollywood Hotel (or others) by all means, but don’t miss its gorgeous penguin parade. Like its name suggests, fairy penguins walk (or should one say waddle?) their way home after having fished for their food the entire day. The administration at Philip Island does not allow photography as it might disturb these delightful creatures. So leave your camcorder behind while you take in the lovely sight.
We also strongly suggest that you pay the Koala Conservation Centre a visit. For a little over five dollars (if you are an adult) you can watch these delightful marsupials hugging trees in somnolent postures.
There are some great walks here for enthusiastic strollers. We recommend The Nobbies, a nature park located at one of the remotest points of the island. Here, you will get to the Seal Rocks which, at one time, sheltered almost 20,000 seals. The number dropped significantly owing to indiscriminate seal slaughter. The cool breeze blowing in from Antarctica renders your walk truly pleasurable during summertime.
Philip Island is extremely popular with anglers who love to fish either individually along the coastline or in batches of charter expeditions that leave from San Remo and Newhaven. Certain spots like Western Port have become popular with trawlers because of the diversity of the catch they can come up with. Depending on the season, you can catch a variety of salmon, flatheads, whiting, and squid. You would require a license, of course. Plus, you will need to follow specific instructions regarding bait gathering, fish size, and techniques. The best information is available at the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
A worthy tip: before launching a full-fledged trip on this gem of an island, we recommend that you halt at the Philip Island Information Center which also serves as valuable gifts’ and souvenir boutique.
