Can you install a LATCH car seat system in a car that doesn't have it?
I have a 99 Nissan Maxima and a 2000 Acura TL. My wife and I are going to be starting a family soon, and would like to install a LATCH system on these vehicles rather than buy a new one with the latch system. I know you can use the seatbelts on these vehicles, but I would feel safer with the LATCH system.
No. LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Top tethers for CHildren. You can install top tethers in most any vehicle - just ask the dealership, some will even do one for free. But the lower anchors can not be installed. Lower anchors are the bars that come out of the seat bight (where the seat back and seat bottom meet). Top tethers are metal loops installed in the cars rear dash (or in SUVS, cargo area) that you hook a strap going from the top back of the child seat, when the seat is in front facing position.
LATCH is NOT safer than seatbelts! It was invented to make car seat installation more universal and easier. It didn't, however, since the lower anchors are differently spaced in different makes of cars, and the top tethers are sometimes located in different places. Sometimes, the lower anchors can't even be used with a particular child seat b/c they are too narrowly spaced. The safest installation is the one that gives the best fit for that particular child seat.
