Flying with 20 month old, stroller, seat and general advice?
I'm traveling from Boston to Bermuda in May with what will be a 20 month old. I'm wondering if it's a good idea to bring a stroller for navigating the airport or if it would just be an unnecessary hassle. My son has his own seat on the plane, do I need to bring his car seat too? I'm having nightmares about having to lug the stroller, seat, diaper bag and carry-on through the customs when I get there; any general advice to make the trip easier? It's a family trip so I will have some helpers.
Ask the airline about the car seat. Probably they can lend you one if it's necessary. Also, the airline normally seats families with young children before the other passengers; ask if they will do this for you. Call them before your departure date to find out what facilities they can offer.
Ask for bulkhead seats. You'll be much more comfortable, and your little one can cruise back and forth. It's better to call the airline in advance to make sure you get this seating before someone else does.
Try to consolidate the carry-on with the diaper bag.
Make sure you have lots of plastic bags for soiled clothes, used diapers, etc.
If any of you use medication, put one set in the luggage and keep a duplicate set with you in the plane.
I did find an umbrella-type folding stroller very helpful for negotiating airports--you often have to walk a long way from the concourse to the boarding lounge and onto the plane.
Other passengers are often very helpful. I used to fly about a third of the way around the world with a nine-year-old and two babies, and found that nice people helped wherever I went.
